Several months ago TonyC reported on the opening of a branch of Noodle Island, the San Gabriel chicken/noodle house, behind the Bank of America and dance studio on Garfield and Garvey. However, every time I went by, the restaurant was closed. Well finally when I dropped by this morning the restaurant was open--but with grand opening signs for Ace Kitchen, not Noodle Island as the signage used to say. At least parts of the menu are reminiscent of Noodle Island's unique dishes, particularly the Crossing the Bridge noodle soup with your choice of two to six toppings, and the ancient ginger chicken noodle soup. This might lead you to speculate that this is Noodle Island wrapped in a new name, which was my original thought. However, digging into my Chinese restaurant memorabilia vault, I find that Ace Kitchen has a different Chinese name from Noodle Island, and more telling, a new telephone number, too. Consequently, this is a new restaurant, albeit at least partly a copycat of the previous operation. Street address is 122 W. Garvey Ave., #B, but I don't think it's visible from any spot on Garvey.
Also since we're talking about restaurants that had branches in both San Gabriel and Monterey Park it looks like Duck House, which originated as Lu Din Gee in San Gabriel, has abandoned its plans to open a second location in San Gabriel, as that never completed space on Las Tunas appears to be for lease.
