'A Fish called Avalon,' South Beach - Huge portion, pricey and mediocre food!

Located on the busy Ocean Drive stretch, this popular restaurant was packed outside but empty inside when we arrived at around 6.30pm. A really strange phenomenon!....since inside was nice and cool whilst outside was hot and muggy. May be patrons prefer people watching than enjoying their food under a more comfortable surrounding?

Our server from Columbia was very friendly and professional.....the only positive thing of the whole meal.

As for the food, they were mostly ho-hum and disappointing.....though portion size was very generous.

The appetizers of Grilled Spanish Octopus and Crab cake were border line acceptable, with the overly charred and dry crab cake, composing of excessive fillers, a major disappointment. The 'all lump meat' version I had onboard the cruise ship Norwegian Encore was way, way tastier. The octopus was tender but lacking in charred aroma and tasted bland.

Taste profile of the Blue Point oysters were inconsistent and unbalance?! A couple morsels, sweet and briny whilst a couple bland and tasteless?! Interesting for the same varietal?!

Biggest let down was their house-special 'Grilled grouper topped with crab meat au gratin' dish. At over $41, the fish was dry and way overcooked! We were offered a replacement but by that time we were quite full and declined. A nice gesture by management though!

Based on the above, may be their advertised, award winning ' Key-Lime Pie 'might not be what it claimed to be?
