there's been ample discussion recently on this board about where to get the best authentic baja style fish tacos, so this isn't meant to revive that. i haven't lived in mexico or california and so i can't comment on the authenticity of the tacos we had recently, but i can comment on their taste!
my husband and i finally had the chance to go to both Dorado Tacos and Cemitas in Brookline as well as La Verdad Tacqueria in Fenway for the first time..now that the weather's nicer, we're more willing to stroll some distance for our food.
Dorado was first. we ordered the Ensenada and Dorado fish tacos (both beer battered) and i think a Chorizo. the fish tacos were both amazing - perfectly fried to a light crisp, chunks of fleshy meat amidst smooth tart crema, soft double tortilla shell - a delicious mouthful. i didn't try the chorizo; my husband liked it, but i think next time we'll be ordering just the fish tacos because they're that good!
we went to La Verdad later in the week, and ordered the Pescado and Carnitas tacos. the pescado was a soppy, drippy mess. the flavors didn't stand out and you couldn't taste the textures because everything was soggy. the tortillas were sort of grainy or cornmeal-y (i assume maybe that is how they were supposed to be, but it made the texture even more strange). the carnitas taco wasn't special...and as my husband said, "the quality of this meat is suspect." i don't know if our tacos were lower quality because we ate in the tacqueria part of the venue (rather than the sit-down restaurant), but still...it didn't make me want to go back. i did want to try the churros con chocolate...but i don't know if they will disappoint me, too!
