Most people who cook at home are eternally grateful for dishwashers, but it's also easy to take them for granted. The first automatic model was invented by Josephine Cochrane in 1886, and she brought it to the World's Fair in 1893. Only restaurants and hotels bit at first, but eventually, dishwashers became a common household staple that lots of us would hate to do without. Cochrane's appliances also evolved into the KitchenAid brand, so in a roundabout way, we also have her (and the Columbian Exposition) to thank for our treasured mixers!
