Sunset Beer Company is the first craft beer store in the Echo Park area, and it’s got a bar and tasting room to boot. mrgreenbeenz admits to a bias against American craft brews, which tend to “sledgehammer you with hops, grains of paradise, seasonal herbs,” but was pleased to find a global selection from Germany, Belgium, England, and even the good ol’ USA at the recently opened store. For better or worse, it even has a “heaping” selection of Unibroue, which mrgreenbeenz says is “perhaps the only Quebecois import more gag-inducing than Celine Dion.”
Particularly impressive is Sunset’s selection of Hitachino Nest Beer from Asia, including the spectacular Red Rice Ale and a ginger-flavored beer. mrgreenbeenz also bought a Saison Dupont, “a cloudy Belgian farmhouse ale strangely reminiscent of unpasteurized [Korean rice wine] Makkoli. I thought I was pretty much over Belgian beers but this stuff was amazing—crisp citrus notes” with a moderate level of ABV (alcohol by volume).
You can buy beers and drink them at the bar for a $2-per-bottle corkage fee. Sunset Beer Company also serves six rotating brews on tap.
