If you’ve been choosing packaged foods that contain sugar thinking that it is healthier than high-fructose corn syrup (registration required), you might want to rethink your strategy.

At the spruced-up Gourmet site, Barry Estabrook reports that despite opposition, beet farmers will be planting Roundup Ready sugar beets this season.

Roundup Ready beets have been genetically modified to survive being sprayed with Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup. Roundup Ready corn and soybeans have been grown for more than a decade, but not without controversy.

The saddest part? Estabrook reminds us that, like other GMO foods, the products containing the sugar made from the Roundup Ready beets won’t have to be labeled as such, so unless the label states that the product is made without genetically modified ingredients, every single one of the uncountable products on store shelves containing sugar could also include genetically modified items. Mmm, sweet!
