My wife and I plus two grown-up kids had a wonderful 'wedding anniversary' dinner at Zen yesterday! We all had the $120 Sushi Omakase course... and in our opinion, extremely good value!
Since my last visit, the menu has changed a bit, specifically, the choice of O-Tsumami offered. Whole shrimp tempura is now replaced by a couple of delicious shrimp balls! The small piece of grilled Wagyu beef has now been replaced by a piece of tender sweet braised octopus and a sliver of Matsutake mushroom. The other two cold ' plant based ' hors d'oeuvre were umami rich and delightful. The sweet walnut cream was a definite stand-out. So was the drinkable jello-soup! The previous small bowl of soba noodle has been replaced by a dense and complex bowl of duck based miso soup with mushrooms.
For the main part of the dinner, majority of our 13 Nigiri sushi pieces used Nata sourced directly from Japan.....some arriving just yesterday evening! Those that are not were from other exotic corners of the world. A few stand outs included, Hokkaido Scallops and Uni, Hirame ( Fluke ), Hamachi, Gampachi, Aji ( horse mackerel ), Anago ( sea eel ), Botan Ebi all from Japanese waters. Blue fin Maguro, Chu-Toro and O-Toro from Portugal, King crab legs from Russia and Wild ocean trout from offshore Scotland.
By the way, our timing was immaculate since it coincided with the arrival of a huge chunk of Blue fin tuna at the restaurant to which the chef practiced his dissecting and preparation skill in front of us at the sushi bar!!
Our complimentary anniversary dessert of Japanese rice puff pastry shell encasing home made coffee ice cream was oh so gooood! The iconic Mandarin Cream Pie was as delicious as I first tasted it almost two decades ago!
All in all, a most memorable meal filled with nice, delicious surprises!
