Since Burdick's was way too full the other night, I headed over to Cafe Algiers in Harvard Square for some hot drinks and dessert. The place is cute and cozy enough, and I understand that it's particularly likeable to some bc you can smoke there. I ordered a hot cocoa which was good but definitely not worth $4.50. I also ordered a slice of chocolate cake ($4.50 or something around that) expecting some serious dark goodness. Instead, I got a relatively small slice of cold, dry cake. I've had wedding cake that's been frozen before so I know that pre-frozen cake does not have to taste like the crap I had. I had them take the cake back and give me some pecan pie thinking that they couldn't mess this up. The pie cold and hard to eat. All the desserts there are frozen beforehand, but I would think they'd have figured out a better warming procedure. So all in all, the cafe has nice ambience, overpriced cocoa, and wretched desserts. Anyone out there had a good dessert experience at Algiers? How about with food?
