Yucatán Chowdown Report: El Rinconcito Yucateco in Santa Rosa

Melanie Wong | Jun 14, 201001:23 AM     7

Inspired by Columba’s posting, http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/713355 , four chowhounds enjoyed a Yucatán Sunday supper on El Rinconcito Yucateco’s patio. Our ordering strategy was to pick the uniquely Yucatán items on the menu. The antojitos: panuchos, salbutes, empanadas, and tamales de platanos are three to an order for $6.95. Mix and match is allowed here, luckily, and we wound up with the equivalent of two antojito orders plus four platillos ($9.95 each). Our waitress’s eyes widened in shock when I asked if we had ordered enough. We would soon find out that portion size is large for the price.

The larger platillos came out first, quickly followed by the smaller appetizers. Soon we were awash in Mayan-style pink pickled onions and habaneros. We needed to commandeer a second table to hold our food and we wondered how we could possibly eat this much.

The dishes we tried were:

Panucho topped with shredded grilled chicken and black bean puree
Salbut topped with cochinita pibil (a special request)
Empanadas, one of each filled with chicken, ground beef and cheese
Banana Leaf Tamal stuffed with chicken and red sauce
Cochinita Pibil, five-hour “roasted pork in achiote seasoning, chopped red onions and habanero, rice and black bean puree”
Relleno Negro, “Yucatecan spiced chicken in black mole”
Poc-Chuc, “charbroiled pork marinated in Yucatecan spices with black bean puree, roasted red onion, cabbage, radish, avocado and roasted spiced tomato sauce”
Escabeche, “chicken boiled soup with sliced red onions marinated in orange juice, black pepper and a jalapeño pepper”
Corn tortillas

We also tried the sandia and horchata aguas frescas. No liquor license here.

I’ll ask my dining companions to share their impressions and I’ll return with my own later. For now, I’ll just say this: there were no leftovers.
