[I have included one picture below (chowhounds board only allows 1 picture) but for more of the restaurant itself, the sushi bar, etc, please visit my personal blog, www.xanga.com/trueno92 - thanks!]
Hi Chowhounds, i have posted here before about sushi buffets and included some rather entertaining reviews of the places i have been to. Usually good food, like sushi, or I will rant about HORRIBLE food, again, like sushi...
See.. LOTS of ppl go to eat sushi.. more and more are exposed to it, and there are "sushi-buffets" springing up all over markham. I used to be a major threat to those places.... but its restaurants like this one that is keeping me away from those suburban-sushi-smorgusboards-for-the-masses....
yes, that is Japanese preserved shredded scallop, way in the back!
Quanitity I can get anywhere....... but QUALITY sushi is hard to come by these days.. and since i have been eating sushi pretty much, well for over a decade now, i have a pretty picky palette when it comes to seperating the good from bad.. and usually the good has to be very good. Very good value, quality, price, portion and service.
A Toronto staple of mine that long-time-readers will know i mentioned repeatedly has been "Sushi on Bloor". Yes, a suburban kid like me has urges to go downtown for a day and i'll go out of my way to dine at this place.. I have been to others, MANY other sushi restaurants in Toronto, ones that brag on Japanese names, ones owned by Japanese people, ones operated by Koreans and even one in a yuppie part of town where the sushi-chefs were appearently drunk, but they all fall short because when i walk thru that door on Bloor i am always greeted with a table in 5-15 mins followed with generous portions of quality nigiri-sushi, maki, sashimi, terriyaki, tempura, at a reasonable price and i'll be taken care of with great service...and most importantly, this is what KEEPS ME GOING BACK.
Now, one of their own sushi-chefs, Sam, has taken off to become the man-the-helm of a NEW sushi restaurant: Yorkville Sushi.
Located 1-minute away from Bay subway station is a sushi-bar that has the same core-menu-selection of dishes as Sushi on Bloor, but with a few extras and slightly greater selection.
How the heck do i find out about new sushi restaurants in the heart of downtown.. i have no idea, but what i can say is that i showed up at 9pm on a monday night and expectedly the place, as with all of Yorkville, was relatively quiet. I ordered my ususal off a menu very similar to its sister-sushi-bar, and I was pleasently surprised as it was prepared skillfully, with salmon that was firm and flavourful and tuna that was rich, tender and full aroma. Both the salmon and tuna bit cleanly and didn't tear or sheer. The rice used for the maki and nigiri sushi was cold (as its supposed to be) and seasoned perfectly, with rice vinegar and a hint of sugar.
I hate it when i go for sushi and my maki (roll) has tiny filling on the inside and a huge coating of rice on the outside... faithful to its sister-sushi-bar, Yorkville Sushi's maki is top-shelf (as you can see) and packs a generous 8-piece maki set with their bento-boxes and sushi-combos and 'a la carte'.
Prices are similar if not identical to Sushi on Bloor (very high on the value scale), so don't think just because you are in Yorkville, you are gonna get blasted with an expensive meal.
They also have an outdoor patio and are LCBO liscensed.
84 Yorkville Ave
Northwest corner of Bay and Yorkville
Highly RECOMMENDED!!!! They are still pretty new in Yorkville - cheers and konbanwa from your drunken-off-plum-wine-insomniatic!
