Yorkie Candy Bars

Doreen | Jul 26, 2004 09:08 AM

Dear Chowhounders--

Does anyone know where I can find Yorkie candy bars-chocolate and biscuit (blue wrapper) as well as the raisin and biscuit (brown wrapper)--available in Queens, especially in the Woodhaven/Jamaica area? I know Stop & Shop in Maspeth has them. ALso, are there any speciality candy stores in Manhattan that carry British candy bars? For those of you that are unawares, Nestle in England mounted and ad campaign to increase sales of Yorkie bars to female consumers, as it was felt that the Yorkie bar had become associated with "macho truck-driver" image. So, they produced Yorkie bars with wrappers marked "Not for Girls" "Not for Handbags" "Don't feed the 'birds'!" (dated Brit slang for "girls/chicks), as well as a series of humorous telly-vised ads. It is alleged that the consumption of the candy bars rose 30% during the campaign (but were WOMEN buying them?--that's what I'd like to know!) Thanks! Doreen
