yolk only ??

Made a chocolate cake from Saveur Magazine, the recipe calls for the yolk of two eggs. What is the difference in result if whole eggs are substituted for the yolks. The leavening in this recipe is baking soda added to buttermilk.
It is an 8" sq cake and looked perfect from the oven but sank somewhat after a bit of sitting.
