Yasu - Brookline rant

eastcoasthound | Aug 5, 2005 11:45 AM

After a raving review by one of my friends, a few of us took a ride down to Brookline to try out some Korean bbq at Yasu. Theres a big sign outside that says "under new management."

We were quickly seated, but a korean lady quickly came out and said something in Korean to the hostess and we were quickly moved. It seemed they were preparing to close for the night even though it was only 9pm and they close at 10:30. In any case, perusing the menu the prices were very reasonable and everything looked pretty good..all the standard dishes were there. We (2 boys 1 girl) ordered a platter of kalbi, bulgogi, tempura app, spicy seafood soup and some udon dish. The waitress giggled and laughed. She said "only 1 kalbi?" we responded..."yes." Then she laughed and said "only 1 bulgogi?" We responded "yes" again. Then she said "for THREE of you?" So we asked if that wasn't enough in her opinion. We repeated that 3 times with no answer. Keep in mind...everyone's english was terrible. So we thought..ok, we can always order more if its not enough.

Anyway, food came....spicy seafood soup was in a small bowl...priced at entree price...but for single serving size..it was also incredibly bland. Tempura....for $10 you get 2 shrimps and 3 veggies. Udon was regular. The meats....kalbi was good. bulgogi was dry and not tasty. Also, they were like kid size. The usual side dishes that came with the meal...were pretty much non existent. You get kimchee..and a couple other things. When dropping off the rice..she made a point of saying you only get 1 rice for each order of meat. And the bowls of rice were only half full. We never saw the waitress again after dropping off the rice..no refills for drinks or anything.

I had to get up and walk over to get her attention to get the check.

Service was terrible...but i think the quality/price of the food was worse. Only thing that was good..was kalbi. And at $19 a pop, its cheaper then everywhere else...but you also get half as much.

I recommend the korean bbq place in medford...much friendlier service...better food in my opinion, the name escapes me at the moment though. I called my friend afterwards and told him how dissapointed I was by his recommendation and he said....his date was friends with the owner...something he left out when he told me how cheap everything was and how much food they got.

O well, another place off my list of places to try.
