Yak burger at Restaurant Shambala

I believe this place has been around for a while but I personally just randomly discovered it and was intrigued by the Yak burger and Yak tartare. Didn't try the latter.

I tried the burger. Never had Yak so I have no basis of reference for it but the yak burger plate as a whole was very good and was a satisfying portion for me. The yak pattie itself had the same texture and look as beef but without the "beef" taste. It seemed lighter, a bit of a subtle flavor that I've never tasted so maybe this is the "yak" flavor. Not gamey at all. It wasn't juicy but it wasn't dry either. Definitely felt leaner too. I liked it quite a bit. It came with tomato slices, mushrooms and nicely caramelized onions. The tibetan bread Tingmo acted as the bun.

The potatoes and salad that came with it were good too. The potatoes had an interesting spice on them, couldn't really say what but it was different from anything I've had. Kind of reminded me of cinnamon a bit. For me the best thing was the accompanying sauce. Not that the burger needed it but it was another new flavor for me. Not sure what was in it (My best guess is turmeric).

It costs $30 which is expensive but expected since yak meat is very rare in North America. I definitely think it's worth a try. I intend on returning to try the Yak tartare.
