We had an excellent dinner last Saturday at Xicohtencatl in Great Barrington, 50 Stockbridge Rd. (413) 528-2002.
Chips and Salsa (freebie) -- thick but crisp chips with plenty of corn flavor -- salsa chunky and well balanced.
Camarones Machos (shrimp in their shells sauteed with butter, lime and a bit of jalapeno) were spectuacular -- even better if you chewed on the shells. The bed of sauteed spinach soaked up the sauce and was also excellent.
Mole Poblano -- perfect mole, with, again, a great balance between chocolate, 6 varieties of chilies and almonds -- the chicken breast was good, though I prefer dark meat. Black beans done just right and exceptional yellow rice, with a bit of lemon and spices.
Shiitake Chipotle -- spectacularly good -- essence of mushroom flavor perfectly set off with onion, garlic, cilantro and chipotle -- the best dish of the night -- with yellow rice and excellent refried beans.
Papaya Agua Fresca -- Papaya "water" -- OK, but too much like soda pop.
Mango Cheesecake and Flan de Rum y Kahlua -- quite good, though by then we were orally exhausted.
Strawberry Margarita and Regular Margarita, both on the rocks -- strawberry not great, regular spectacular -- LOTS of tequila in both -- really pack a punch.
Service was good, if a bit slow with the place full. We had a table on the porch, which was very pleasant.
All in all, much better than we had expected. We'll be back.
