My sister-in-law's 50th birthday Dec. 30th called for a special event. She loves to cook and we decided to give her a great experience and arranged to have a chef come in and do a cooking party. Turkish theme, 9 dishes all made from scratch by 5 of us under the able and calm direction of chef Ed Rek (Edmund.Rek@gmail.com) - both he and his wife are accomplished chefs and have obtained many authentic recipes by extensive travel.
Dishes were complex and included 2 different breads, zucini pancakes, turkish meatballs, white fish poached in white wine with orange/lemon garnish, hot eggplant dip, beet salad, roasted vegetables rolled with walnut nut butter and apricot pilaf. Ed brought all the unusual ingredients (pomegranate vinegar) and we filled out the food order - lots of fresh coriander, curly parsley, dill and GARLIC. We all ended the afternoon with a deep respect for anyone preparing turkish meals from scratch - the number of ingredients and the complexity are a challenge.
Our class started at 1:00 and we finished all the dishes by 5:15 or so. We fed 22 people (lots of wonderful left-overs) for a special dinner for an all in cost of approx. $600.00, including the services of Ed, access to the recipes and the groceries - our wine (lots of it!) was supplied. Other guests brought dessert and we enjoyed a champagne toast to ourselves, and Ed, at the start of the evening event.
