Wondee Siam -- What am I missing?

vvv03 | May 20, 2003 01:27 PM

I recently went to the original Wondee Siam on the recommendations on this board and had a borderline terrible meal. I had been to Wondee Siam II before visiting Sripraphai, and thought it was decent, though not earth shattering, Thai. In between visits to Wondee II and Wondee I, I have made my first second and third visit to Sripraphai and I suppose it's another tragic case of that place ruining all other Thai food for me. It's kind of ironic how fantastic food can turn you off to it in any other circumstance, but now I'm getting off topic.

I ordered pork with basil and garlic at Wondee I and asked for it to be very spicy. Admittedly, I'm a little nuts with the hot stuff. If I'm not in pain, it has missed the mark. But I tell you, a spicy food wimp could have eaten this stuff and barely batted an eye. Not to mention the fact that it was flavorless beyond the lack of heat. My boyfriend got a soup that was also flavorless and a crispy duck dish that was the best thing we ordered, but even that wasn't floating my boat. Did we misorder? Maybe. But this wasn't about mediocre food. This was about food that was really not good. I felt duped in that "Westerners don't know from good food, so let's serve their dulled tastebuds a bunch of drivel" way. I couldn't wait to leave. I guess from now on, when I get a Thai jones, it's the 7 train for me...
