WNR list

Mr Grub | Apr 5, 200512:30 PM

In a recent discussion w friends, the conversation turned to restaurants we’ve placed on a personal “banned substances” list – what the Grubs refer to as our WNR list (Will Not Return). Perhaps not surprisingly, most places were condemned because of service rather than food issues.

So, the question for hounds: What reputable, non-chain restaurants are on your WNR list &, more importantly, why? Please limit your choices to places that you have given more than one chance – even if the one-&-out experience was horrid.

Even tho the Grubs believe to the very core of our cholesterol-choked souls that good chow could be served by Rex the Wonder Horse & we’d return for more, our list of three:

Valentino (Santa Monica) – Wonderful food. Three chances, three times disrespected by owner & staff alike. If I need attitude, I fish w my brother-in-law.
Bistro de L’Hermitage (Culver City) – Solidly uninspired food. Uncomfortable setting. Frosty proprietors. If I need French attitude, I go to France.
The Buggy Whip (Westchester) – Remarkably & consistently awful food at mysteriously high prices. Slooooooow & incompetent service. Metal detector at the door so no one can bring in a gun to shoot the piano player. Rumored to have started as a Monty Python skit.
