Weekend Eating Getaway -- Geneva? Galena? What?

Seth Zurer | Oct 7, 2002 12:40 PM

My scant knowledge of the chicago suburbs is only now, after seven years in the city, beginning to take shape. So you can imagine that my knowledge of Illinois/Wisconsin/Indiana more than 15 miles from the loop is even scanter.

I'm trying to figure out the best spot within 4 hours drive for a weekend getaway. We'd like a non-intrusive B&B (i don't tend to get too psyched about enforced socializing with antiquing hoteliers) or a little hotel, for a non-obscene amount of money. Price range I don't know, because I'm not even sure of what the average rates are. I'd like to be within striking distance of someplace where the leaves are changing. Plus i'd want to eat well on local goods. I'm probably not interested in large resort towns, or hyper-rural surroundings. Something like Stillwater MN, but closer in.

I saw the Times article on Galena and it sounds pretty appealing, and a friend recommended Geneva on the strength of some tapas place they've got. The thread below on Grand Haven is interesting too. Any feedback and otehr ideas would be greatly appreciated.
