a week in downtown

I am a Boston Chowdog, who will be in San Fran the week of the April 14. I am at a conference at the Fairmont.

I am looking for low to medium priced restaurants that have very good food and perhaps offer something I might not be able to get in Boston. (It is not the right time of year for Dungeness crabs, is it?)

I have been to many of the fine restaurants in SF, on the expense account (Boulevard, Kuleto's, Zuni, Slanted Door). This trip is on my nickel, mostly - so I am trying to ferret out less well known and less expensive restaurants with spectacular cooking.

If I could have a dinner and a glass or two of wine for $50 each - that would be my price range.

The restaurants do not necessarily have to be close to the Fairmont - I have no problem taking public transport.

I love French food, anything Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Italian. Also Asian: Thai, Japanese, fusion, Indian.

Thanks in advance!
