What are Weber "Flavor Bars"?

stuck in Hartford County | Apr 19, 200907:08 AM     6

Cleaned my Weber grill yesterday, and I got to wondering what the heck the "flavor bars" are- HOW do they "flavor" food? They seem to be nothing but metal protectors for the burner. I lost my owners manual a few years ago, and I was wondering if anyone knows what the metal bars have to do with flavoring grilled food- or is it just some marketing b/s. Maybe you have to put something under/in them to add flavor? I'm confused.
