Water Ice in South Philly

I was coming home from South st. this evening and stopped at John's Water Ice on 7th and Christian. This place is great! I think it rivals the Lemon Ice King in Corona, Queens. This is the perfect place on an 80 degree summer evening. They only have four flavors, Chocolate, Lemon, Cherry, and Pineapple, also ice cream, though I didn't taste any. (Also, "gelato," not the gelato I'm used to from elsewhere, but a mix of water ice and ice cream, which seems to be a Philly thing). The chocolate ice was great, like a yoohoo slushy, and the lemon was also great. I'm going to try the pineapple next. Cherry didn't look all that good, but I'm sure my son will love it. (Tried the cherry ice at a place on 9th and it had bits of marascino cherry in it, and made me a little bit nauseated, so I'm a little gunshy about cherry right now).

This place also gets big ambience props. There's a wide sidewalk out front, kids running around, a counter in the front and machinery clearly visible in the back.

What a find.
