I love my neighborhood, especially when this continually crappy weather limits my desire to get in a car and troll for parking on snow-clogged streets. I have "hearted" the Washington Square Tavern and Ribelles a number of times and they deserve it. Now I'm going to give a shout-out to a much-maligned local joint serving a much-maligned cuisine: Chinese-American. Golden Temple rocks on a snowy night. We stop in for excellent cocktails (a fabulous Manhattan made with Laphroaig and a pomegranate cosmo, both huge, beautifully chilled, and a tad
under 10.00 bucks each. We share the best spareribs between here and BT's smokehouse (Golden Temple special ribs) and split a small order of spicy green beans and a small order of shrimp in lobster sauce (black beans and pork version, brown and savory)
and go home stuffed and happy. We get excellent service (always have, over 30 years of going here) and just what we expected: excellent drinks and very good quality food with no particular authenticity except the vague appellation "Chinese American." We know what we come for, we appreciate that we get it, and we don't care one bit about its authenticity. Its authentically itself.
