"Wall of Smoke" Fil-Am BBQ Daly City (long)

Susan (formerly Canard) | Mar 5, 200510:38 PM     1

Fil-Am Cuisine and House of Barbeque are the names on the signs for this DC hole in the wall. It's on School Street, across and down a block from the giant Albertson's on Mission. The wall of smoke lured me in; any place that smells that good two blocks away is on my to do list.

The menu is brief and cheap. This is a paper plates and plastic forks place, and they seem to do lots of carry-out business.

Here's what was on offer:

BBQ Pork Skewers
BBQ Chicken Skewers
Crispy Fish
Stewed Fish
Beef stew (spicy)
Ground beef in sauce
Lumpia
Pancit
Rice

I had the rice and two skewers of pork, my boyfriend had rice plate with Ground beef sauce and one chicken skewer. The Pancit was sold out. We both preferred the pork to the chicken, for its depth of flavor. The ground beef sauce was okay, but I preferred the Spicy Beef Stew. Drinks on offer are limited to canned sodas and tropical fruit juices. Our dinner of two combo plates and two beverages was under twelve dollars.

There are three tables for four, across from a tiny open kitchen with massive ventilation. The cooks were very friendly, answering questions, and giving us samples of the unfamiliar items on offer.

It's not a spectacular find, or hidden gem by any stretch of the imagination, but it'll be a convenient place to grab takeout on the way home. Caveat: Filipino food is new for me, so I have very little basis for comparison.
