Tonight I took my SO and his parents to Saddlepeak Lodge for his birthday. Wow. First, the ambience is quite unique for the L.A. area, and a nice change of pace - warm and inviting. After the amuse bouche, which was a lentil soup, we tried the buffalo tartare with "unusual condiments" - my favorite app, the mushroom pastry with smoked duck - decadent but well worth it, the squash blossom with crab - combo sounds ambitious when you read all the elements but it really works, and the fois gras - well done, but not my favorite. We paired that with an excellent Benton Lane Pinot Noir. Then two of us had the Elk - my first time having elk, and I loved every tender morsel, and my SO had the buffalo and his father the lamb. I had bites of each and all dishes were wonderful, though the elk was my favorite. We had the Stag's Leap Syrah, which the server recommended. It paired perfectly. We finished with the bread pudding and the chocolate creme brulee, and I'm torn as to which I liked the best. It wasn't an inexpensive meal, but it fit the bill for a special occasion. I look forward to having an excuse to return.
