Von's Express Halal Korean Fried Chicken | Sunnyvale - Silicon Valley

Melanie Wong | Apr 25, 202111:08 PM     4

Who wouldn't be curious about Korean fried chicken prepared by a Bengali chef? I could not resist. This outpost of Von's located inside Taj Mahal market is a franchise of the well-known Korean fried chicken (KFC) chain, but uses halal hand-slaughtered poultry. On September 11 I called in a lunch order to follow my tradition of marking the day by patronizing a Muslim-owned business. As a first-timer and not having a menu to consult, our dialog was the Bengali version of who's on first as I tried to ask about the different options but couldn't interpret the answers. I thought I ordered half no-spice and half with red sauce (yang nyum), all drumsticks. Also there's "crunch" vs. "crispy" that a Von's veteran will need to explain to me.

In addition I got an order of goat curry to share with my brother in Palo Alto. We were both impressed even though I wasn't sure what we were eating. I think I was given no-spice and spicy, and nothing had sauce. They looked the same but tasted different. Not really a batter, the chicken's crust was very light and crisp, and did not soften in transport or on cooling. The spicing tasted vaguely South Asian and burn came on slowly but built up to a medium-hot burn. I had to run off and didn't get a chance to taste the goat curry. William said the curry was fiery hot and I would have needed the missing rice.

The online ordering site is new, just in time for Ramadan, which should make things easier though it has only a partial menu. Can anyone help solve the puzzle of what I ordered? We enjoyed the fried chicken and give it high marks for traveling well too.
