Volunteering programs? (Maybe a bit off-topic.)

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but my question is one some of you may have an answer to. I'm looking to volunteer some time to food-related programs here in D.C. I've heard that D.C. Central Kitchen is a great charity and always needs volunteers--to make food for the soup kitchen, etc. Has anyone had any experience there? I'd love to do something with an educational component--like teaching basic cooking skills to children or to new parents.... Does anyone know of any programs like that? Ideas, anyone? (It also would have to be metro-accessable).
