Visiting from New York -- staying at Hilton San Gabriel

Karen | Sep 7, 2005 01:31 PM

Hi, I'm visiting with my mom and aunt for a family wedding in Pasadena next weekend. We are staying at the Hilton in San Gabriel. I've been told that it's convenient (walking distance?) to the large chinese/asian mall that supposedly has good chinese food. Being from New York, I'm somewhat unfamiliar with the concept of mall dining -- is it true that the restaurants in the complex or in the vicinity are not only plentiful, but also authentic? What are your top recs for non-cantonese chinese restaurants in that area. Preferably inexpensive to moderate priced, possibly unique to the area (i.e., we get plenty of soup dumplings in new york, and i've been to ding tai fung in taipei), convenient to the hotel. By way of background, my mom grew up in Taiwan, so she's a little picky. If there are any must-try spots outside of the immediate area please share those as well.
Thanks so much!!
