I consider myself to be a well-bred, positive person. But, when I read somewhere on this site someone recommending Whist at The Viceroy in Santa Monica as a place to dine, my eyeballs became permanently fixed to behind my head.

Whist is brought to us by the same owners of O.C. stand-out Aubergine (in Newport Beach). Let's face it; what stands out in behind the Orange curtain doesn't necessarily mean it will hold up in the big city. And, to add insult to injury, Whist is amateur, wayyyy over-priced, noticeably dis-organized, and un-necessarily cavalier compared to her sister down South.

My most recent experience at Whist was an embarassment. I started with a salad, of which I could only stomach one bite. Our waiter recommended their scallop entree, which came out leathery and tasteless.

And, when our waiter noticed our table hadn't enjoyed our over $200 meal for 3, he came out with a rasberry trifle dessert, which we also left in-tact.

Whist is still awaiting approval of it's liquor liscense from the city of Santa Monica. There's some problem with serving cocktails outside, so waiter's aren't allowed to serve alcohol to the tables in the patio.

It's too bad Whist is such a flop, considering the beautiful outdoor setting along side the hotel's pool. I hope they can get it together.
