My girlfriend dragged me to this place on Saturday before a movie at the Sunshine, and to my great surprise, I cleaned my plate. It's on 1st Ave a little north of Houston, I think it's called Sanctuary. Apparently it used to be a real restaurant, but now (temporarily?) it's an all you can eat buffet of vegetarian food for seven bucks. Pretty good deal. They had about eight choices, plus fresh baked bread that was really good. I had six of the eight dishes, and there was only one, a squash dish, that I thought was kinda crummy. Most importantly, they had a tofu pasta curry dish and an eggplant dish with a italian tasting seasoning, and in both dishes, the tofu and eggplant had good texture and consistency. My great hatred of the veggie food I eat because of my girlfriend is that tofu and eggplant are so often squashy and disgusting, they don't hold together right and fail to pick up the flavor, but this place did right by me. And like I said, the bread was fresh and quite good. Oh, and they had corn on the cob, which I fully expected to be mushy, but it wasn't, which amazed me.
Plus you get a ton of food for seven bucks. If you have vegetarian friends who are looking a little pale and sickly (and aren't they always, a little?) take them here and fill them up.
