Valencia in Santa Clarita? It's Nardone's!

To arrive in San Francisco and miss being entangled in Bay Area evening commute traffic, we left Cypress at noon with a quick stop in downtown LA to admire MOCA's Visual Music exhibit and the Abstract Expressionists and a walk around the new Walt Disney Concert Hall and jumped back on Hwy 5, driving north. A stop to refuel (gas $2.49 for regular) in Santa Clarita was timed perfectly for food, too. Late lunch hunger found us at Nardone's, open just one month ago, in the Old Orchard Center at 23367 Lyons Avenue at Old Orchard Village Road in Valencia. It's an Italian Deli and a treasure! John's Special isn't on the menu yet, it will be a new addition as the "Giovanni" - a sandwich of three meats, roasted red peppers, provolone, balsamic vinegar, tomato and it is simply fantastic. Ask for it and John will make it just for you. We also ordered the calzone with pepperoni and it was rich with ricotta, mozzarella, and chopped pepperoni with a side cup of a fresh chunky tomato sauce for dipping. At this point, I was reluctant to leave, and the deli case had fresh mozzarella grande, Sicilian olives, and canoli tempting me. Strombolli on the menu! ... baked Ziti Quatro Formagio...ground turkey and chicken meatballs with pine nuts and raisins...
we ate our canolis at the rest stop...just heavenly.
