Update on Taqueria Guadalajara, Healdsburg

Melanie Wong | Apr 26, 200203:17 AM

After reading Chron’s mention in Wednesday’s piece on Mexican food in Sonoma County, I thought I’d post on my visit last week to Taqueria Guadalajara. MarkB has recommended it as well and I last mentioned it in the link below.

The small retail center where it’s located is undergoing a facelift and a sign outside says that it’s open during remodeling. The inside has been spruced up since I was here during the summer --- new chairs and table coverings and fresh paint on the walls. It smells cleaner too, no more stale cooking odors. I can see why Chron felt comfortable recommending it now. (g)

I had my usual. The tongue (lengua) taco is still the best one in these parts – soft and buttery texture. I also had the beef cheeks (cabeza) taco that was good too with rich beefy flavor. The tortillas here aren’t as toothsome as the Sebastopol Rd. truck use, but good enough. My previous complaint here was that the salsas tasted tinny and the chips were usually stale. This has been remedied with new improved chips that are served warm and a new salsa selection – a roasted tomato chipotle and a tomatillo avocado, both are quite tasty. The horchata is now refrigerated, instead of chilled on ice, so it’s creamier and less dilute. You can order it without ice for more volume for your money. Several aguas frescas are available, including fresh squeezed carrot or orange juice. I can’t think of any more caveats now that they’ve made these positive changes.
