Sorry that this update pertains to an original message on the General Board, but it's of particular local interest.
There's an eBay store called restaurant.com that auctions off restaurant "gift certificates". There are some restrictions; they're basically coupons. $25 coupons begin at $5 in the auction format (+ .50 service charge). It seems they often can be won at or near the starting price.
To date, I've gotten a coupon to Thyme and one to Aubriot, just to see if this idea is worth it.
Last night, I had dinner at Thyme. My wife is out of town, and I thought it would be a good chance to get out and try a new place, at a good cost. Long story short...hawaiian yellow fin tuna, saffron potatoes, and arugula with a red wine sauce: $13, including certificate cost, tax, and tip of 20% pre-coupon cost.
(Aside: while the tuna was very enjoyable, and the place fairly cool, I would not recommend this meal at $31. At $13, I wouldn't recomment missing it...if anyone has more questions about Thyme, feel free to ask.)
