This place, owned by the Vesta team, got a lot of attention when it opened in Astoria earlier this year. We finally checked it out this weekend for brunch and were underwhelmed. The food and atmosphere were certainly enjoyable, but the flavors were incredibly tame.
The charred tomato and serrano chili salsa was oddly sweet -- like a marinara sauce and the accompanying tortilla chips were stale (though at least they weren't dripping with oil!).
The eggs in the Mexican breakfast (eggs scrambled with tomato, potato hunks and jalapenos) were almost flavorless, though the cabbage and corn salad on the side was terrifically tangy and very flavorful. We tried to spice things up with the "spicy" sauce provided with our meal, and while this was tangy it was certainly not spicy!
We also tried the homefries with onion -- which turned out to be a bowl of tiny deep-fried hunks of potato with hardly any onions for flavor (eh) -- and the mustard greens w/sesame soy vinaigrette, which was simply that, though the greens were very fresh and flavorful, and we enjoyed them as a counterpart to the heavier eggs and fried potatoes.
At $10 for an entree and a liquored-up drink, it wasn't a bad deal. But the food was so underwhelming that we were hardly inclined to return.
Did we miss out on the really good brunch dishes (e.g., the veggie jenga or some of the meaty fare)? Should we give this place another shot?
