Unagi Iron Yakimeshi and Hyper Ramen at Dohatsuten (Palo Alto)

My return visit to Dohatsuten was almost exactly a year after the first one.

Three of us ordered several items to share. We revisited our two favorites, the hotate croquette and Nagoya tepa, which were as good as before. An order of kimchi and the wakame salad gave us some crunch and greenery.

The Agedashi tofu, $4, was competent, presented well with waving bonita flakes and a lacy crown of shaved scallions and nori. Nuanced and complex dashi seasoning, but the exterior of the fried tofu slabs was a bit rubbery.

The ramen menu has expanded considerably with more topping choices and now a deluxe signature offering, Hyper-Dohatsuten Ramen, $11.99, that we ordered. Our server suggested that we pick one of the lighter broths because there are so many toppings, so we picked the salt broth (shio). Funny thing is, the deluxe ramen with the abundant toppings was served in the same small bowl as the regular. Chashu, Chinese chives, bean sprouts, cabbage, spicy minced pork, soft boiled egg, stewed pork belly, green onion, corn, bamboo shoots, and Korean chile threads took up most of the volume. Sharing this three-ways, each of us got only a few spoonfuls of the broth and not much noodles. The shio stock was clean and simple, making a good foil for the pile of toppings, but I can’t really say much more about it or the noodles. The stewed pork belly was as buttery, tender mouthful, and the bacon cut chashu was an improvement over the last visit. Tasty jelly-yolked egg with a light seasoning broth was done to a tee as well. With the improvement in topping quality, Dohatsuten moves up a couple notches in the ramen rankings.

Yet the best dish this night was iron yakimeshi made with unagi (grilled eel) and pickles. This is a crispy, burnt rice dish, the Japanese version of dolsot bibimbap, made in a sizzling hot iron skillet. Smoky fragrance and flavors, lots of fresh and pickled vegetables, and a soft egg with grilled eel that turned into some kind of wonderful when everything was mixed into the crisp bottom rice at the table. William returned here shortly after to try the curry beef version and reports that the eel yakimeshi is tastier.

Once again, while we enjoyed the ramen here, Dohatsuten’s other dishes are the reason to come back.
