I will preface this by saying perhaps I was spoiled by Wegmans over the years.. Now, living and working in the Richmond metro, we do most of our grocery shopping at Ukrops, alternating between the Staples Mills store, Ridgefield , and Short Pump stores for the most part.
The stores are probably the best supermarket in the area, and all in all do a decent job.. I mean we don't shop there because we hate it.
But one thing I consistently have seen at various Ukrops is that the Ukrops bakery bread has to be the plainest, most insipid product ever. I have tried their pump/rye, their "crusty" italian loaves, rolls, and a number of other varieties.
What I have noticed is , for one, often a almost TOTAL lack of salt. I am not saying I want the bread to be salty.. but imagine bread that has as much flavor as a plain rice cake... actually a rice cake would be more flavorful.
The first time we tried it, my wife and I looked at each other and said "Um.. did they leave something out, like, um.. SALT?" It was that evident from the first bite, like tasting hungarian goulash without paprika.
The texture of the bread, too, is just somehow, off.
I don't know how they could bake things that look so good, and yet taste so.. blech. Every so often, we try it, but usually end up throwing out half or more of the loaf in favor of something from a bakery (like Frenchy's, when I have a chance to get there) ; or sometimes even in favor of "Arnolds" bread...
