Turtle/shark fin/cow penis wine at Saburi

MV | Mar 26, 2006 04:33 PM

I had some time to kill last night before meeting up with some friends for a drink and ended up at the bar at Saburi in murray hill. I had a hankering for some ramen which i have been somewhat obsessed with lately and ordered the tonkatsu ramen. The ramen itself was decent as was the broth but the slices of pork in the soup were very good. A decent version, nothing to knock you socks off though.
Anyways as i was sitting there i noticed three large glass containers with liquid and various things floating in them. After i asked the waitress what they were she offered me samples of each. The first which was "for women" was a light brownish orange concoction that had white frilly looking mushrooms suspended in it and was sweet, tasting vaguely like plum wine. Next up was the one "for men" which had ginseng in it amongst other things. The liquid was a dark brown and was stronger than the previous one. I m a fan of those little ginseng bottles so i did enjoy this one alot. I then asked her about the third container to which she told me "oh that one is scary". this one had a whole turtle floating in it, a cow penis that looked like a skinned 1.5 foot snake and the cartiledge from a shark fin. I was told that this one was very strong so i got it with an ice cube. It tasted similar to whiskey and was pretty pungent. It definitely wasnt as vile as i anticipated. Anyways it was definitely interesting as i had seen critter wines on tv but had never tried them.
