Turnip Cakes in San Francisco

Jim Leff | Sep 7, 199911:23 PM

Suze was asking about where to find pan fried turnip
cakes in SF (I had been lamenting that you can't find
great ones in NYC; that it's more a SF thing)

Suze, you're gonna hate this answer, but...ANYWHERE.

Just like you can find good versions of black bean or
foo yee sauce (or hot and sour soup, chow fun, or that
slimy dim sum thing usually translated as "rice
noodles") all over Manhattan chinatown, SF is crawling
with good turnip cakes and those sesame studded bean
paste-stuffed fried balls.

My favorite place for dim sum in SF is Seafood Harbor
Restaurant (279 El Camino Real, Millbrae, 415-692-
9688), right near the airport. Hit the link below to
see an article on eating around SF that includes info
on this place.

My favorite Chinese bakery is eastern bakery 720 grant
avenue (@ commercial street), 982-5157. They also make
great egg custard in lardy pastry.

I've been meaning to get to a Burmese called Burma
Super Star on Clement Street in SF., Since Dagon closed
and Mingala hit the skids I've been very Burmese-
deprived, and it's one of my favorite cuisines.
