Howler tipped me off to this place. I vaguely remember that it's run by the same people that operate the Malaysian student canteen, but not 100% sure. The menu gives greater emphasis to various dishes meant to be eaten with rice, rather than those one-dish hawker meals even though those are present as well.
Sambal turong is aubergine with topped with the spicy smoky pungency of sambal, a mixture of chilli, spices and belacan (fermented prawn paste), the heat balanced with bit of sweetness. Texture of the aubergines was nice, soft but not mushy, the skin somewhat parchment-like and crisp.
A sotong curry involved very tender squid, beautifully scored on the surface to generate flowery curls upon cooking, and providing a bigger surface area for catching the sauce, a mild mix of spiciness, dark palm sugar sweet and tomato or tamarind sour.
Thick slices of banana bask again the sweetness of palm sugar, carried by the richness and aroma of coconut milk, along with tiny nubs of sago (tapioca balls) for texture.
Well worth trying more stuff. Could be more spicy for me but that's a quibble.
