If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Community Pizza Night (Companion, Odonata, Uncie Roe’s in Santa Cruz)

Keep forgetting to post about my visit to the Tuesday night community pizza night hosted by Companion Bakeshop and Odonata Wines with Uncie Roe’s at the helm. With this week’s warm weather, tomorrow might be the last nice evening this year for dining al fresco in Santa Cruz.

Here’s the menu for my night, August 21.

Had a hard time deciding, and consulted with the guys behind the counter on what to order. The combo of pepperoni with Padron peppers was calling me, but then I was offered a sample of a chile for a heat check. I found it too mature and spicy. A fan of Neapolitan style pies, I went with the Marinara, $18, rec.

After ordering and paying for a pie to eat here, I said I’d be next door at Odonata Wines. I had time to taste through the selection ($5 tasting fee) before my pizza was brought to me. I ordered a glass of the rich and aromatic Rousanne/Marsanne/Grenache Blanc blend, $6, to have with my pizza and the tasting fee was waived. Good deal. I claimed a seat outside the tasting room.

I’d asked for my pizza scorched, and it was indeed that with fine leopard spotting but too black and burnt in places and not just singed. Not a bad job on the upskirt.

The simple and clean sauce was made from California tomatoes, then topped with capers, sliced garlic, and basil leaves. A drizzle of olive oil added some richness to this vegan pie. The pizza dough was pulled a little bit too thick in a few areas of the crust that were doughy and underbaked. A little too heavy on the sauce, weighing down the thin crust and making it soggy by the time I’d finished half. But I did like the flavor very much and the chewy rim of the crust, enough so that I’d return again.
