My brother and I dropped by for dinner at Tsing Tao, a Korean-Chinese institution for the first time two months ago on our way back from Salinas. It’s been around for 35 years!
Zha jiang mian ("noodles with soy bean sauce") with slippery, chewy hand pulled noodles, julienne of cucumber and black bean sauce studded with shrimp, squid and onion was top notch. Only available in one style, this was pretty much the dry style that I prefer, rather than brothy. At first we hedged and did not mix in all of the sauce, wanting to test the salt level. But after a taste of the sauce-coated noodles, we added the rest. The proportions were just right. The zha jiang mian here is absolutely classic and one of the best versions around.
Snappy and well-seasoned dry fried green beans were great too. This dish and the noodles would be my reason to return. These would both hold up well as take-out orders.
Sweet and sour beef was okay but on the tough side and kind of dull. And we would recommend against ordering the dry sauteed chicken wings with garlic sauce that were over-battered and over-flavored. The complimentary kimchee was unremarkable.
We had over-ordered because this was a first visit and I wanted to try the Korean-Chinese standards. Also, we knew this would be our last family meal together for awhile. The first cases of suspected community transmission of the novel Coronavirus in Solano and Santa Clara counties had been announced the day before. We headed back earlier than planned to begin preparations for staying at home for at least two months. William got all the leftovers because he would be a shut-in.
Portions are huge here and staff were very friendly. Even though we were there on the late side, the restaurant was more than half full with families who seemed to be regulars and well-known to the wait staff.
Tsing Tao remains open at this time for to-go orders. Please support Chinese neighborhood restaurants that are suffering during the Covid-19 epidemic.
