Troy, MI Restaurant Week

Foog | Aug 18, 2014 04:53 AM

So last year for Troy Restaurant Week my wife and I hit Ocean Prime and were pleased with our whole experience. So Restaurant week is back and my Sister in law and Brother in law were coming out with us. We decided to take them with us back to Ocean Prime this year. This was not a mistake. Service was great, food was awesome.

SIL and BIL both had Filet with haricot vert. She had a salad and he had the French Onion soup. She wanted most of the goodness on their salads left off, but it came as ordered and it was good. He loved his French Onion enough that I did the manly move of asking for a taste. It was quite good. I do not typically order French Onion, but I would order this. Their steaks both came out sitting on the haricot vert which in turn was sitting in a cabernet jus. Temps on steaks were perfect with good seasoning. I did not try the steaks, but when my SIL finished her dish I did "accidentally" run my finger through the jus on her plate. Let me just say you could put that jus on the shoes I am wearing now and I would eat them as long as there was still jus.

My wife ordered the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes with sweet corn cream and succotash. Let me just say right now she had reservations about the sweet corn cream, but once she received her food she no longer had any reservations. She said it all worked well together. I didn't get much succotash in my bite, but the bite of crab cake I had with the sauce was great. I always love when a crab cake actually tastes like crab and not over used bell pepper or bread crumbs.

For me it was the Truffle Sea Bass (%45 instead of %35 a person totally worth it), sea bass is one of the things I have always meant to order out but never gotten around to. Man I didn't realize what I was missing. It comes out on a bed of creamy whipped potatoes that in turn are on champagne truffle sauce. I asked if it was actual Truffles used in the dish or truffle oil. Apparently it is both. Typically is the answer is truffle oil, I will take a pass because in most cases it is over used when it is used. Since this was using the real thing and oil I thought they might use it better. They did, my dish was awesome. I was the first to finish my food which isn't rare, but the sea bass was cooked perfectly. It had some cut up snap peas and carrots in there some where and a composed bite of everything potatoes, veg, fish, and sauce was just satisfying. I almost licked the sauce that was left off the plate. I did get as much off the plate with my fork as I could.

SIL and BIL ordered the butter cake. This is not a cake I've had so of course I handed my unused fork to my SIL to give me a bite immediately. The finish was of the bite is hard to explain but it was rich and warm and very good.

Wife ordered the carrot cake with pineapple sauce. She was ecstatic because she does not care for walnuts and it is rare she can order carrot cake out without nuts being involved. The cream cheese frosting was awesome, the cake was good, and I really liked the pineapple sauce. Yes I took a bite of hers before taking a bite of my own dessert.

I ordered the lemon cheesecake with blueberry syrup. I don't hate blueberries, but I almost asked for this part to be left off, because it's just not my thing. But I decided to try it as is since lemon and blueberry do seem to go so well together. This was not a mistake it was awesome. I don't think it was spectacularly special or anything if you are a connoisseur of cheesecake, but I thought it was above average for sure. I really enjoyed it.

In short for the second year in a row we have visited Ocean Prime for Troy Restaurant Week and have not been disappointed. Service was perfect, food was awesome, the value was great. I could have eaten more, but I absolutely didn't need to eat anymore. It was just that good. None of the portions would qualify as large, but for the price and quality of the entire meal the portions were just right.
