trouble at slanted door

shocker | Jun 5, 200201:27 AM     15

i just had the most disconcerting lunch at the slanted door.

having not been to said restaurant in a good year or so, i figured i'd stroll out to the embarcadero, take in the sun and check out their new/temporary digs.

i first sat at a table by myself and quickly decided i was more in a 'bar seating' kind of mood. checked w/the hostess if it would be all right and sidled up to the bar.

as i adjusted myself, the bartender looked at me and said, 'are you really going to eat at the bar?' in the most 'why on earth are you here?/i could not be any less bothered' tone of voice. i, in shock, thought he must have been joking. as i read his face for a delayed smile or some kind of hint that he WAS joking, i replied 'oh yes, i'm sitting here and eating'. the moment passed and it was clear that he was not kidding.

i ate and he barely did his job.

the food was exactly what i was in the mood for-- deftly exectuted and balanced flavors. chicken salad w/cabbage and rice vermicelli. fresh, heady, tangy. just great. also had a side of baby bok choy w/baby shitakes. similarly delicious-- braised w/a slight retention of toothsomeness.

i'll go back because of the food and the recognition that-- i'm sure-- this monstrously rude and annoying bartender was an aberration.

am i right here? is the service usually professional?
