Just back from a long trip to Seattle.
Got into Seattle Thursday night, was greeted with a box of Fran's chocolates, which included the smoked gray salt caramel, which was very tasty. I'm not sure I could taste the smoke, but it tasted a bit saltier than the plain gray salt caramel, which is fine by me.
Friday lunch was Salumi. The lamb prosciutto saga continues. They were out of it again, and no lamb sausage, either. I hastily decided on the porchetta sandwich. Good, but sort of one-dimensional compared to some of the other things I've had there. Boyfriend got the cooked meat plate, then realized what he really wanted was the cured meat plate. I got to try the fennel sausage, which is probably what I should have ordered instead.
For dinner Friday night we went to Hosoonyi (Korean food) in Edmonds. We'd never been before, but we sort of felt like we knew it already because we'd been to Hodori in Mesa, which is owned by the same people who own Hosoonyi. We got broiled mackeral, which tasted like it had been marinated in something salty, and the fabulous seafood crepe, which was cut up into pieces with kitchen scissors at our table. The entrees all come with 6 or 8 little side dishes, including some translucent tube thingies that we couldn't identify (but were tasty). The people around us were ordering lots of barbecued meats, which looked and smelled wonderful. Portions are huge. Would like to go back with a huge crew of people to order a lot of things.
Saturday we went to Malay Satay Hut with another couple. The guy is a really adventurous eater, so we ordered fish head curry soup, much to his delight (and his girlfriend's mortification). It was as rich and spicy as I remembered. Also had the pork chops (yummy, though a bit sweet) and the mango tofu salad. It's fun to take someone who loves food to a place like Malay Satay.
We also went to Amore chocolates again, and I had a wonderful, super-gooey chocolate chip cookie (had it heated up at the store). New items there included a strawberry truffle (nice subtle flavor), and a chocolate cream that was both light and decadent. I really, really, really hope this place catches on. I love any place that makes something as simple as a peanut butter cup a sublime treat.
Sunday morning we went for St. Clouds for breakfast. I had the "corned beef hash". Really it was more like pulled corned beef served over home fries. Very tasty, but not what I would call hash. Making corned beef hash from scratch seems to be a dying art at breakfast places. Boyfriend had eggs with collard greens, pancetta, and cheese, which was delicious.
Sunday evening was supposed to be 25 for $25 dinner at Brasa. Unfortunately, as I've already mentioned in the 25 for $25 thread, I picked the most inopportune time to get sick. I did get to try the roast suckling pig entree, which was very good, before I had to leave.
On Monday afternoon, I recuperated with a bowl of pho, and later, when I was sure I was feeling better, the apple tart from Brasa. Liked the crust and the tart filling.
Now compiling my wish list for the next trip . . .
