'Just got back from yet another grand trip to my favorite city. We tried the following restaurants:
Mr. B's: My first time there. Pretty good service (not great, but good), quite good food (I'd give it an 8 out of 10). The Gumbo Ya-Ya was, as mentioned by many prior reviewers, great. The BBQ shrimp, while intense, are also too sweet, imo. Overall, I liked the place, though there are better meals to be had in town.
Delmonico: So far, the absolute best service I've had in a restaurant...which wouldn't matter much to me if the food hadn't also been great. A wonderful experience. I prefer it slightly to Emerils, and by light years over NOLA, which we went to only once and vowed never to visit again.
K-Pauls: Amazingly, in 15 years of visiting NO, I hadn't been to K-Paul's...always assuming it must be a tourist trap. Well......was I ever wrong. The service was no less than stellar and the food was the best I've eaten in any of the 25 or so "top-line" NO restaurants I've visited. A solid, no-compromise knock out of a restaurant.
Commander's Palace: I'd been three times for brunch and loved it. They really do make a great brunch... world-class French Toast and a couple of egg dishes to die for. So for the first time ever we tried a non-brunch meal there (lunch, in this case).
*I* can cook better than the food we were brought. A "bisque" that wasn't as good as some canned soups I've had, the shrimp grits that tasted like some canned soup poured over cream of wheat. No depth of taste, no complex melding of flavors...nothing. My wife's food was no better.
To compound the horror, we had the worst service I've ever had in a restaurant. 'Dirty plates and glasses left on the table for almost an *hour* as we awaited our main courses. Not a single word of explanation or apology for HUGE delays between courses. Nothing.
To their credit, though....when we complained to the host on our way out he took the entire meal off my credit card. Sorry, while I appreciate the gesture, I don't fly all the way to NO to eat crappy food....even for free. I felt MUCH happier having paid $240 at K-Pauls (dinner for two with two bottles of wine) than getting the slop at Commander's for free.
A tourist trap if ever there was one.
'Didn't get a chance to re-visit Brigtsens, which we love.
On my list for next trip: Clancy's and August. Any comments on these two places would be warmly welcomed.
