Thanks for all the good suggestions. Here are a few of my impressions from my trip last week.
On Kauai I spent most of my time in Waimea and Kokee SP.
I thought Brick Oven Pizza was only so-so. They used canned mushrooms on my pizza and I didn't think the garlic oil added anything to the taste.
I was not impressed with the lilikoi chiffon pie at the bakery next to Wongs Chinese in Hanapepe. The pie was better at Kokee Lodge, but I concluded I rather have something else for dessert. The pork sandwich at the Lodge was very basic but flavorful and moist.
The Hanapepe Cafe was very good. I wish I had found it earlier in the trip. Obsession Cafe in Waimea was only so-so.
I really liked the Ishihara Market in Waimea. Great selection of different pokes. I loaded up for my three day stay in Kokee SP.
I had the fish tacos at the Kileuea Fish Market after a visit to the lighthouse. I agree with other reviews that this place is worth checking out.
On Maui, I spent my time in Paia and the upcountry town of Kula.
I had a basic burger at the Hana Ranch Restaurant. It was OK. This is a popular spot for the tourist busses so try to avoid the noon hour. The little roadside spots on the road to Hana would have probably been a better choice.
In Paia, I can recommend Moana Cafe and Flatbread Pizza. Mana Foods is a great spot for organic groceries.
In Kula, the Kula Lodge has spectacular views but the food is OK and expensive for what you get. Drinks, especially at sunset, is a much better choice. Sandalwoods was good for breakfast. But the operations seemed a little chaotic and getting my food took some time.
In Makawao, the Steakhouse was a classic place that probably hasn't change much since it opened. I had a nice basic steak.
