Trip Report -- Italian Restaurant Week in Manhattan

jnwall | Jun 8, 201710:19 AM     5

My wife and I recently had the opportunity to explore several Italian restaurant offerings for lunch in Manhattan. We especially enjoyed Via Carota, Osteria Morini, and Maialino. Manzo, at Eataly, not so much.

We especially liked the fagioli all’ucceletto and the grilled asparagus salads, as well as the Tagliatelle with green peas and proscuitto and the Meyer lemon risotto at Via Carota. Good wine choices, as well.

We also enjoyed a variety of pastas at Osteria Morini, as well as the seafood salad.

Maialino was, however, the best of this group. We found gracious service, delicious food, and a strong and adventuresome by-the-glass wine list. We especially liked the beet salad and the white bean & escarole salad, as well as the cavatelli with pork sausage and the bucatini all'amatriciana.

We had high hopes for Manzo, at Eataly, especially given the prices, which were the highest of all the restaurants we went to. And we did find the mozzarella antipasti to be delicious, and the small though strong by-the-glass wine list had really good choices on it.

But the veal crudo with whipped bagna cauda and the tagliatelle alla bolognese were, frankly, without much flavor. The serving of pan roasted halibut was tasty but -- to our minds -- a tiny portion for $29 a serving. Also, the menu promised sunchokes, ramps, and lemon organo jam along with the halibut, but we had difficulty finding a trace of any of these on the plate.

We were disappointed -- we had eaten well at Eataly NYC on previous trips to Manhattan, and at Eataly in Torino, last month, and expected more of the same. Oh well.
