Had a nice dinner Saturday night at Trattoria Trecolori, a restaurant I long ago dubbed the "Olive Garden Alternative" in the theater district..
We showed up a half hour early for our reservation and were promptly seated. Food and service were good and efficient. It was entertaining to watch the staff work at lightning speed to change the tablecloth and place settings in order to turn their tables around quickly to accommodate as many pre-theater goers as they could. (There was a line out the door which they wanted to eliminate.) The staff works hard on the weekends and it shows, but they manage to remain cordial and welcoming.
While there are many better and more upscale Italian spots in New York, it's nice to have a comfortable standby in the theater district when all you want is a good bite that doesn't break the bank, before a show. Trattoria Trecolori is one of those spots. Reservations recommended as it is quite busy on theater nights.
1. Caprese Salad (Yes I know tomatoes are out of season, it's the cheese I love)
2. Veal with Eggplant and Prosciutto
