Last night, I went to Trattoria L'incontro in Astoria, based on a few raves on this board.
What a big disappointment. This place is one of those restaurants that thinks the more salt, cheese and cream they stuff into everything, the better people will like it. Tried two risottos, which were so creamy and cheesy that any subtlety or texture of risotto was obliterated. No one could eat an entire portion of this stuff. And they served the risotto in a cheese "bowl", which was not only awful for presentation, but inedible because of the salt.
Short ribs with pasta, which the waiter had raved about, was also a big plate of overkill. Extraordinarily salty and heavy. Really, everything we ate was just saturated with salt - I've never had such salty food.
Even the pizza was absolutely terrible - people I was with said it reminded them of the pizza mixes they used to sell in grocery stores - the kind that came in a box.
The place was packed. I guess if you appreciate excess in your food, you'd like this. But I felt sick after eating just a little. And it was really pricey, too.
The only good thing I can say about it is that they had really cheesy but kind of cool live music.
