I heart Rivoli's (Solano Ave, Berkeley) hot fudge sundae. Maybe my favorite dessert in these parts. Maybe the best sundae ever. Vanilla ice cream, fudge sauce, chopped nuts, whipped cream--nothing unusual--but all the best components, brilliantly assembled.
So when we were @ Corso last night (Rivoli's sib) and saw a sundae on the menu, had to get it. Corso is Italian, and so was the sundae. Vanilla gelato instead of ice cream, caramel and chocolate sauces, whipped cream, nuts, and cherries. When the waiter brought it, I was excited. Same tall sundae glass. And it wasn't bad at all. And it made sense, as an Italian version of a sundae. Perhaps I'm just stuck in my tastes; and any change leaves me pining for the original. But it wasn't to die for, like the Rivoli American one. Gelato a little wrong. Cherry flavor a little wrong. Etc.
Be interested in other views re both sundaes. And also would love recommendations for other stellar sundaes (comparable to Rivoli's?) in the Bay Area.
